The Law Society of NSW operates the Specialist Accreditation Scheme to identify solicitors who demonstrate proficiency in a specific area of law. An accreditation is only given if the solicitor can demonstrate a high level of proficiency and experience in that area. Solicitors who fulfil the requirements of the Schedule are entitled to use after their name, the words ‘Accredited Specialist’ in the nominated area of practice.
To become an Accredited Specialist, a solicitor must have practised full time law for a minimum of 5 years and worked in their area of speciality for a minimum of 3 years. The Law Society set thorough assessments in communication, problem solving, client relations and their specialist area of law, which must be passed to gain status as an Accredited Specialist. To continue as an Accredited Specialist, the solicitor is required to annually renew their certificate to practise law and membership of the Law Society together with updating their skills and knowledge at a specialist level.
